Reducing the effects of a mycotoxin challenge on dairy cow performance

Problems with mycotoxins in dairy cows are more common than often thought

The incidence of problems with mycotoxins in dairy cattle is increasing. Selko runs an annual global monitoring program in which feed samples and ingredients from across the world are being analysed. Of the 1240 ruminant feed samples tested, more than 90% were contaminated with at least one mycotoxin.

Mycotoxin risk management in dairy cattle requires a comprehensive programme

A mycotoxin management programme should include:

  • Avoiding ingredients that are contaminated through early identification
  • Proper crop management to reduce growth of molds on the field or in storage
  • Adding mold inhibitors and silage inoculants while making the silage and spraying mold inhibitors to the face of the silage after cutting
  • Adding mycotoxin mitigation products into TMR directly or through concentrate portion

Selko TOXO

Selko Toxo

Selko Toxo® is a mycotoxin mitigation product for ruminants. It contains bentonite a mycotixin binder with at least 50% smectite, which has strong binding capacity for aflatoxins, ergot toxines and LPS, in combination with glucose biopolymers which maintain gut tight junctions to reduce the translocation of mycotoxins into the blood stream of dairy cattle.

Administration

Selko Toxo is presented as a dry powder. The recommended dose is based on the level of mycotoxins in the dairy ration and is 15 to 45 g per head per day:

  • in case of low toxicity: 15 g
  • In case of medium toxicity: 30 g
  • In case of high toxicity: 45 g

Figure 1. Average number of inseminations per cow during a period of treatment with Selko Toxo compared to a period without treatment with Selko Toxo

Trial 1, Selko Toxo reduces the negative impact of mycotoxin contaminated TMR in dairy cows

The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of Selko Toxo in reducing the negative impact of feeding TMR contaminated with mycotoxins to dairy cows. The addition of Selko Toxo to the TMR of high performing dairy cattle resulted in improved fertility. This was observed by the farmer, but also reflected in the cow management data, with a significantly (P=0.04) reduced number of inseminations per cow (see figure 1).

Figure 2. Compared to a competitor product, feeding Selko Toxo to dairy cows challenged with mycotoxins resulted in an improvement of heat detection, fertility and pregnancy rate and the reduction of the percentage of abortions.

Trial 2, Selko Toxo improves reproductive performance of dairy cows fed mycotoxin contaminated TMR

The objective of this study is to determine the efficacy of Selko Toxo in alleviating the negative effects of feeding mycotoxin contaminated TMR on the reproductive performance of dairy cows. During a 10 month trial period, 5 months of treatment with Selko Toxo was compared to 5 months of treatment with a competitor product. The addition of Selko Toxo to the ration contaminated with mycotoxins resulted in a positive effect on heat detection, fertility, pregnancy rate and abortions of dairy cattle (see figure 2).
