Problems with mycotoxins in dairy cows are more common than often thought
The incidence of problems with mycotoxins in dairy cattle is increasing. Selko runs an annual global monitoring program in which feed samples and ingredients from across the world are being analysed. Of the 1240 ruminant feed samples tested, more than 90% were contaminated with at least one mycotoxin.
Mycotoxin risk management in dairy cattle requires a comprehensive programme
A mycotoxin management programme should include:
- Avoiding ingredients that are contaminated through early identification
- Proper crop management to reduce growth of molds on the field or in storage
- Adding mold inhibitors and silage inoculants while making the silage and spraying mold inhibitors to the face of the silage after cutting
- Adding mycotoxin mitigation products into TMR directly or through concentrate portion
