Beyond the rumen of dairy cattle

Key-take away messages

  • Feed restriction and heat stress might can cause hind gut acidosis and "leaky gut" in dairy cows.
  • Nutritional strategies can help mitigate the effects of leaky gut in dairy cows.
  • Zinc can reduce oxidative stress in dairy cows and can also improve the immune response.
  • If cows are fed hydroxy trace minerals, the increased amount of zinc available supports enterocyte health and reduces systemic inflammation in dairy cows

Nutritional strategies to reduce systemic inflammation as a result of hindgut acidosis of dairy cattle

On March 22, Dr. Davi Brito De Araujo, Global Program Manager for Selko Trace Minerals gave a presentation entitled: “Beyond the rumen: Effects of trace mineral source on gut integrity and health of dairy cows”.

Effects of trace mineral source on gut integrity and health of dairy cows

During his presentation, Dr. Brito first discussed the advantages of recently developed trace mineral sources such as organic trace minerals and hydroxy trace minerals above sulphates that were commonly used before these newer sources of trace mineral became available[1]. After that, he highlighted that certain common challenges of dairy cattle such as feed restriction and heat stress might lead to hind gut acidosis in dairy cows, resulting in what is called “leaky gut” of dairy cows. There are many nutritional strategies that can help mitigate the effects of leaky gut in dairy cows[2]. Zinc can reduce oxidative stress in dairy cows and can also improve the immune response.

Mitigating the effects of feed restriction in dairy cows

Recent findings from the group of Dr. Lance Baumgard at University of Iowa suggest that feed restriction in dairy cows impedes gut integrity[3]. He also showed that using hydroxy chloride trace minerals instead of sulfate-based trace minerals reduced the effects of feed restriction in dairy cows and also supports intestinal barrier integrity. These differences between trace mineral sources could be related to differences in bio-availability of zinc in the gastro-intestinal tract of dairy cows. The increased amounts of metal ions available to the dairy cow support better enterocyte health, which reduces bacterial infiltration and reduces the occurrence of systemic inflammation of dairy cows.
