Feeding rumen protected calcium gluconate increases milk production on 2 dairy farms in Poland

Key take-away message

  • Selko LactiBute increased milk production of dairy cattle on 2 Polish farms
  • Differences in milk production of up to 2.7 litres of milk per day were observed

Selko LactiBute improved lactational performance and increased milk solids on a Polish farm during periods of heat stress
Selko LactiBute for dairy cows contains rumen protected calcium gluconate which acts as a prebiotic inducing a shift of the microflora. This results in an increase of butyrate and other volatile fatty acids in the hindgut, which improves gut barrier function and reduces the risk of “leaky gut”. Cows suffering from heat stress often have a problem with “leaky gut”. Several trials have shown that animals in heat stress perform better on Selko Lactibute. A polish farmer confirmed these findings, first in heifers, later in the entire herd.

Feeding rumen protected potassium gluconate increases milk production on two Polish farms

Feeding Selko LactiBute reduces systemic inflammation as a result of “leaky gut”

The active component of Selko LactiBute for dairy cows is rumen protected calcium gluconate. Calcium gluconate acts as a prebiotic inducing a shift of the microflora. This results in an increase of butyrate and other volatile fatty acids in the hindgut, which improves gut barrier function and reduces the risk of “leaky gut”. Trials carried out in various research farms and several commercial farms have shown that milk production of dairy cows will increase as a result of feeding Selko LactiBute1,2,3,4. Purpose of the current trial5 was to test Selko LactiBute in two Polish farms.

Material and methods, farm 1

Farm one has a total of 550 cows. A total of 65 cows were included in the trial. Each cow was randomly allocated to one of 2 groups immediately after it calved. Both groups were fed the same TMR with 270 g of starch per kg DM and 180 g of crude protein per kg DM. The trial lasted 120 days. One group was fed 16 grams of Selko LactiBute per cow per day. Milk production of cows and the amount of milk solids were measured on Day 0, day 30, day 60 and day 120 of the trial.

Figure 1: Milk production of dairy cows fed Selko LactiBute compared to controls fed the same diet.

Results, farm 1

Milk production data of cows are presented in figure 1.
Average milk production of cows in the trial over the entire period was 2.35 kg/cow/day higher in dairy cows fed Selko LactiBute. Average production of Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) was increased by 2.77 kg/cow/day.

Materials and methods, farm 2

Farm 2 had 240 cows, milked in 4 robots. A total of 71 cows were included in the trial. Cows stayed in a post calving group for a number of days after calving, so recordings of milk production for the trial started at 30 days after calving and continued until 120 days after calving. Each cow was randomly allocated to one of 2 groups. Both groups of dairy cattle were fed the same TMR with 260 g of starch per kg DM and 170 g of crude protein per kg DM. One group of 35 cows was fed 16 grams of Selko LactiBute per cow per day, the other group of 36 cows served as controls.

Figure 2: Milk production of dairy cows fed Selko LactiBute compared to controls fed the same dairy ration without Selko LactiBute.

Results, farm 2

Milk production data of the cow herd are presented in figure 2. Average milk production of dairy cows over the entire lactation period was 1.85 kg/cow/day higher in dairy cows fed Selko LactiBute.

Conclusion

Selko LactiBute contains rumen protected calcium gluconate, which improves hindgut health and energy partition of dairy cattle. Milk production in the dairy cows included in this study and fed Selko LactiBute was increased on both farms during the entire trial period of 120 days. Average milk production of dairy cows increased by 2.77 kg/day and 1.85 kg/day respectively.
