Managing hindgut health in Nelore cattle with trace minerals

Managing the consequences of feed restriction in Nelore heifers followed by high starch intake with hydroxy trace minerals

During the ASAS-CSAS-WSASAS Annual Meeting in Calgary, between June 21 and 25, 2024, Dr. P. Moriel, Associate Professor in Beef Cattle Nutrition and Management at the University of Florida, gave a presentation entitled: Impacts of supplementing sulfate vs. hydroxychloride sources of Cu, Mn, and Zn on heifer growth performance and physiology during feed restriction and high-starch challenge periods.

The impact of feed restriction and feeding high starch diets to beef cattle in tropical conditions

For Bos indicus cattle in tropical and subtropical conditions, it's very common to experience periods of limited forage quantity and quality, leading to moderate to high body weight loss and severe nutrient restriction during the wintertime. It is also common in those regions following this period of nutrient restriction, beef cattle are transferred to a feedlot where they're going to consume high energy, high starch diets. Feed restriction in beef cattle, followed by high starch intake can be detrimental to intestinal function. It can alter the fecal microbiome, decrease mucus production and even affect tight junction proteins, leading to leaky gut and systemic inflammation.

Managing hindgut health problems of beef cattle with hydroxy trace minerals

One of the strategies that has been very effective to managing hindgut health problems in dairy cattle, is the use of hydroxy chloride sources of trace minerals.

Dr. Moriel presented the results of some of the work he did with Nelore beef cattle in Brazil. He showed that if you use a mineral based supplement in Nelore cattle, that compared to Angus cattle, they have a preference for hydroxy chloride sources of zinc, manganese and copper.

He also showed that replacing sulfate sources of copper, manganese and zinc in beef cattle diets with the hydroxy chloride source of the same trace mineral source can alleviate the negative effects of feed restriction and high starch intake, changing the physiology of these beef cattle, leading to better overall growth performance. Effects on dry matter intake of beef cattle were not observed in this trial.

Replacing sulfate with hydroxy chloride, copper, manganese and zinc in diets for Nelore heifers increased their plasma IGF-1 and resulted in a minor decrease in haptoglobin levels, indicating a lower transitory inflammatory response.

Balancing economic goals with environmental responsibility

Managing a beef farm that is efficient, profitable, and sustainable requires a strategic approach that balances economic goals with environmental stewardship. As the demand for beef continues to rise globally, producers must adopt practices that not only maximize productivity but also minimize the environmental impact of their operations. Efficient resource management involves optimizing the use of feed, water, land, and labour to ensure that the farm operates at peak efficiency. Selko feed additive solutions for beef can help maximising profit of a beef farming operation while at the same time reducing the environmental impact per kg of meat produced.
