Improving sustainability of beef farming by improving efficiency of beef cattle farm operations
On March 22, Dr. Gustavo Siqueira, Head of Beef Cattle Research at the Sao Paulo State Agency of Technology and Agribusiness gave a presentation entitled “Strategies to maximize results in growing beef on tropical pasture-based systems”.

Why is it important that beef farming becomes more efficient?
During his presentation, Dr. Siqueira showed that since 1990, the number of beef animals in Brazil has increased significantly, whereas the hectares of land used for these animals have gone down (see figure 1).
This means there is a need for beef ranchers to increase efficiency of their beef farm operations. Dr. Siqueira discussed key opportunities and strategies that beef farmers can adopt to increase efficiency of beef farming while improving profitability of their farm at the same time. According to Dr. Siqueira, land usage in Brazil drives important changes to the national livestock production models. Changing these productive models is no longer a matter of choice but has become a necessity to ensure sustainability of beef cattle farming.
Management strategies to improve efficiency of graas based beef farming systems
Feed supplementation of beef cattle to enhance body weight gain during the dry and transition seasons in Brazil is key to intensify body weight gain of beef cattle, to increase hot carcass weight and to reduce the age to slaughtering. Dr. Siqueira presented recent research findings, showing the effect of the trace mineral source (sulfate vs. hydroxy) on body weight gain of beef cattle. He also highlighted the key advantages of using the correct level of mineral supplementation and pasture fertilization and he discussed the opportunities to improve efficiency of beef farming through animal purchasing strategies and integrated livestock farming.
