Trace mineral management can improve reproductive performance of cow calf operations for beef cattle

Key-take away messages

  • Profitability of cow calf operations is stongly impacted by reproductive performance of beef cows
  • Feeding Selko IntelliBond trace minerals to beef cattle resulted in higher pregnancy rates after artificial insemination

Improving pregnancy rate after artificial insemination of beef cattle with Selko IntelliBond

Pregnanacy rate after first insemination is an important driver of reproductive performance of beef cattle in a cow calf operation. Trials carried out in dairy have shown that trace mineral has an impact on embryo quality. Feeding Selko IntelliBond improved embryo quality significantly[1]. Two trials were carried out in beef cattle to test the impact of trace mineral source on beef heifer pregnancy rates[2] and pregnancy rates of adult cows in a cow calf operation[3].

Trial 1, Beef heifer AI pregnancy rates can be increased by feeding Selko IntelliBond

Material and methods

The effect of feeding Selko IntelliBond hydroxy trace minerals compared to a combination or sulphates and organic trace mineral sources on reproductive performance of heifers in a cow-calf operation for beef cattle was tested in a trial with 2 groups of 40 heifers each[2]. Beef cattle were supplemented for a period of 70 days, starting 56 days pre-breeding.

Results

Pregnancy rates after artificial insemination and total pregnancy rates were increased in the beef heifers in the Selko IntelliBond group (see Figure 1).

Figure 2, Pregnancy rates after artificial insemination and total pregnancy rates in a group of beef cattle fed Selko IntelliBond compared to a group of beef cattle fed a mixture of organic and sulphate trace minerals.

Trial 2, Impact of feeding Selko IntelliBond on pregnancy rates after artificial insemination of beef cattle

Material and methods

Selko IntelliBond hydroxy trace minerals wer compared with a mixture of sulpates and organic trace minerals (75% of Cu, Mn, and Zn from sulfate forms and the remaining 25% from organic amino acid complexes) in a trial with 261 beef cattle, divided into 2 groups[3].

Results

Supplementation with Selko IntelliBond hydroxy trace minerals improved AI pregnancy rate of beef cattle by nearly 6 percentage units (see Figure 2).

Conclusion

An important driver of profitability of cow calf operations is fertility of beef cattle within the operation. Excellent fertility is required to produce one calf per cow per year in a cow calf operation for beef cattle. Selko IntelliBond hydroxy trace minerals can improve pregnancy rates of heifers and cows after artificial insemination.

The impact of trace mineral management on reproductive performance of beef cattle

Reproductive performance of beef cattle is a critical for profitability of a cow calf operation for beef. Selko IntelliBond trace minerals are scientifically proven to improve trace mineral status, which can lead to improved quality of bull semen, enhanced embryo quality and improvement in AI pregnancy rates in both beef heifers and multiparous beef cows.
